Crossville - Singapore

What inspired you to start making papertoys? Well I had always been into character design, but wanted to move away from 2D to create something tangible. I also wanted to create something which would allow for easy interaction/collaboration with other designers. Paper seemed perfect and allowed for experimentation.

Can you tell us about Crossville and what it's all about? Crossville and it's name came to be because of two main reasons. One, it would provide a perfect place for me to crossover from 2D to 3D, as well as a fun place to crossover with other artists - something I enjoy a lot and is always an extra incentive to keep going. The other being that I didn't want to randomly create toys, so I decided on having all my creations be a part of this one contained world - from it's inhabitants to their vehicles and mechs or even foliage. It adds an extra dimension to the creation process which keeps it interesting to me and it's fun to see the world expanding over time.

What do you find most alluring about paper as a medium? The versatility of it. Paper can have completely different characteristics when applied in various ways. The outcome can very much so retain a paper 'look', but when constructed differently it can also have a very solid looking outcome, almost masking the fact that it's paper. The only limitation is your mind.

What do you see in the future for Crossville? I will keep the Crossville world growing, in both number of models and new interesting collaborations. And see what kind of initiatives I can set up along the way.

Who are you collaborating with now?
I just finished a collaboration with TADO, one of the nicest and funloving couple of people I've ever met. New ones I'm really looking forward to are Huck Gee - who is currently creating a custom design for the difficult 'el Carmesi' model and Jon Burgerman - who is creating a 'Ghostboy' design. But there are quite a few more I'm psyched about like Chick from semperultimo, Supanimal (loved his work for his last shows), Skooly DK / Unchi...
